Scenario
In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film on a rural Texas farm, but when their reclusive elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew finds themselves fighting for their lives. The Day After X (2022) ) Premiere of South by Southwest , writer/director Ti West revealed that he wrote the prequel Pearl (2022) during a mandatory two-week COVID-19 quarantine at his New Zealand hotel before filming could begin. ). A24 saw the script and greenlit the film before production on "X" had packed. He asked star Mia Goth if she would like to stay in New Zealand to film “Pearl”; and she willingly accepted. When Lorraine walks in and turns on the light, there is a modern halogen bulb that was not available in 1979.

Maxine: I won’t accept a life I don’t deserve. there are no opening credits. The title doesn’t even appear on the screen until the end. Ti West’s movie should really have been called "E" for increased. It’s a smart take on slashers from the 70s and early 80s.

As a bonus, the movie-within-a-movie has a 'raised' porn movie (as a bonus, the actor Owen Campbell who plays “the director” even looks a bit like director Tobe Hooper). Quite knowingly adapted from Tobe Hooper’s 1974 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, X has a group of randy pornographers renting a farm from an elderly couple in the middle of nowhere in Texas (actually New Zealand). The main idea of the writer and director West is to create a contrast between the XXX filmmakers and the civilians in the area who fight the Bible. It’s not an uninteresting idea that, of course, echoes the puritanical clichés of old slasher movies where the most sexually active characters are the most likely to be killed off. X takes place about 5 years after MASSACRE so it can include a brief discussion of how home video would change the porn industry (adult films had been available on VHS for about 3 years). The film is very well directed, with clever use of cross-sections between the upcoming porn film and the terror that awaits the group.
The pace is pitiful, though it picks up towards the end
Mia Goth (in a double role; actually a triple if you stay past the credits) and Brittany Snow are two must-have porn stars and each dives in with gusto. Kid Cudi is a cocky draw, while Martin Henderson is solid as the confidant producer. Jenna Ortega is the "crew" all by her loneliness (she manages to keep her clothes on – she must have a better agent). Stephen Ure is a grumpy old man who rents out his boarding house. As good as the cinematography is, X ends up feeling too studied. Once the carnage begins (if not with power tools), it will still be fairly typical of the films he reviews, no matter how well executed and “uplifted” they are; he thinks so.

It’s also too long-winded to satisfy some gore-hounds, and once the blood starts flowing, probably too gross for internet scribes to dream of doing massive online essays dissecting it for its heightened intellect. There are a few twists and turns, but not enough to offset the predictability. In the end, it’s not as clever as West thinks it is, and despite some good direction and acting, it… #39; it’s just too confident to be a fun thrill ride. A24 produced some of the most memorable horror films of the 21st century.
